2003 June 12 Part 2
Thunderbolt Tours USA 2003 - Day 11 | Page 1 | Page 2|
Suddenly, just south of Olney, it all begins to happen. Inflow winds pick up and a very fast developing and descending funnel protrudes from the base, adjacent to a well developed 'clear slot'. We hear the tornado sirens in Olney blaring. However with no time to change lenses (having been on wide-angle to capture the spectacular storm structure) the funnel rapidly dissipates.
.....we are left with a blurry wide-angle zoom. Touch down is confirmed by chasers in the area.
Nevertheless, the show is not over yet. West of this region, we can still observe an impressive developing LP structure. We dart off for a closer inspection.
Impressive this storm is as we approach the town of Newcastle. Incredible CG bolts drop from the top of the updraft to ground, each followed by deep booms of thunder.
The storm continues to wind-up with very impressive rotation on the storm scale. Incredible time-lapse footage. The storm prompts a tornado warning although eventually the base is undercut.
A fitting finale to another highly enjoyable expedition.
