Typically on the wrong side of the dryline in Spring, western new Mexico today is under the gun. Strong deep layer shear, around 40 knots, and CAPE of 2500 J/kg, will set the stage for an active severe weather day on the high plains. Our target is Las Vegas, NM.
As we cross the border in the late morning, a tornado warning is issued for a supercell in that area. Although high based now, this storm - tail-end Charlie - will soon grow to gargantuan proportions.
In fact nothing could prepare us for what develops - it is quite simply an enormous vacuum cleaner!

From an eastern and southern perspective, multiple inflow bands appear from all over the south and east.
